Men's Wellness Blood Work
Blood tests can help find answers to health problems and concerns. These tests allow medical professionals to follow and find trends in your health to help prevent and treat any health problems or concerns they find.
Below are some of the most common tests for men that your doctor or practitioner can conduct.
CBC Testing
A CBC test stands for Complete Blood Count, which is exactly what it means. This test can help detect things related to the bloodstream by assessing white blood cells, red blood cells, and platelets. CBC testing can be a big help in diagnosing many different symptoms.
An annual CBC test is helpful to maintain good health.
CMP Testing
A CMP test helps to test sugar levels , electrolyte and fluid balance, kidney function, and liver function.
A doctor or practitioner will often use this test to help diagnose diabetes.
Free and total Testosterone
A Free and Total Testosterone test helps to detect two different types of testosterone. The first is a free testosterone. These hormones are free flowing testosterone in the bloodstream that are not connected to any proteins. The second testosterone found in a testosterone test is one bound with a protein, they are called SHBG.
Both types of testosterone help practitioners and doctors find ways to help men with different types of sexual dysfunctions. These tests also aid in treating fatigue, depression, hair loss, muscle mass loss, and weakening bones.
PSA Testing
A PSA test is used most often to help find prostate cancer.
This includes using a blood test to determine your PSA levels and any trends in those levels. This test is most useful when it has been done multiple times and assessed for possible spikes in the test.
If your test shows high levels or trends, it doesn't mean you have prostate cancer. A high test is just an indicator of potential risks for prostate cancer.
TSH/T4
This test is used to measure your thyroid levels.
By doing this, practitioners and doctors can help to screen for thyroid disease and see how your body is reaction to treatments for this disease. The test can also help diagnose Graves Disease.
Over 40
Prostate Exam
Prostate cancer is the most common cancer among men. In 2017, the American Cancer Society estimated that close to 161,360 people would be diagnosed with prostate cancer, and that there would be 26,730 fatalities.
To vastly improve a 5-year survive rate, it is recommended that men have regular check ups and prostate exams. If prostate cancer is found before it spreads to other organs, there is a 99% 5-year survival rate.
In order to check for prostate cancer, a trained medical professional will preform a digital rectal exam. This is a simple, quick exam that most medical professionals can perform in a few minutes. An essential part or a prostate exam is sharing any potential symptoms you may have as well as your personal and family medical history.
Common symptoms can be but are not limited to:
difficulty beginning and maintaining urination pressure
bloody urine
difficulty keeping an errection
frequent urges to urinate, even while sleeping
painful urination or ejaculation
If you have any questions speak with your doctor or practitioner. Regular prostate exams are one of the best ways to protect yourself from prostate cancer. If you want to set up regular exams, call our office at 208-881-0902.
Over 50
After the age of 50 it begins to be even more important to have regular men's health check-ups. Men who are 50 and older have a higher risk for many preventable cancers and diseases. The key to preventing or treating any of these health problems is early and regular screening.
COLONOSCOPY
After the age of 50, it is important to get annual colonoscopies.
These test help doctors and practitioners to find colon cancer. It can also help them treat symptoms like:
Long term, unexplained abdominal pain
Anemia (low red blood cells)
Blood in the stool
Change in bowel habits
Unexplained weight loss
If you are experiencing any of these symptoms than you may want to see your local doctor or practitioner. If you are in the Rexburg area, you can set up an appointment with one of our practitioners at 208-881-0902.
